EnergyShield project was accepted in cyberwatching.eu project hub.

Cyberwatching.eu is the European observatory of research and innovation in the field of cybersecurity and privacy. Funded under the European Commission’s H2020 programme, this project contributes to making the Digital Single Market a safer place by promoting the uptake and understanding of cutting-edge cybersecurity and privacy services which emerge from Research and Innovation initiatives across Europe.

In the pre-accession phase the market and technology readiness were evaluated and the project was included on the Cybersecurity and Privacy Project Radar. The Cybersecurity and Privacy Project Radar provides a birdseye view of the complete collection of EU funded projects in the cybersecurity space. Projects with a colour gradient have volunteered in a technology and market readiness assessment by Cyberwatching.eu

Kanaris Bounas from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) presented the framework of the Cybersecurity Culture tool at the IADIS Information Systems Conference (IS 2020) on 2-4 of April. The IS 2020 provides a forum for the discussion of information systems taking a socio-technological perspective. It aims to address the issues related to design, development and use of IS in organisations from a socio-technological perspective, as well as to discuss IS professional practice, research and teaching.

IS2020 gathered more than 80 researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines including technology infrastructures and organisational processes, risk management, ethics and privacy, information security, IS design, development and management, and IS research.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak the conference was held online. The initial work and vision for the tool for the assessment of socio-culture behavior of organisations was presented under the title “Towards a cybersecurity culture tool through a holistic, multi-dimensional assessment framework” and was published in the IADIS digital library.  The attendants commented on the importance of the tool and provided valuable feedback and ideas for the assessment process while also initializing a fruitful discussion on the unpredictability and indeterminism in human behavior.

Holding the conference as an online event brought some minor difficulties such as connection problems that caused delays in the sessions but in general the conference was completed with great success.

According to a Gartner, Inc. survey of 800 global HR executives on March 17, 88% of organizations have encouraged or required employees to work from home, regardless of whether or not they showed coronavirus-related symptoms. At the same time, a profound cyber-crime increase has occurred that cannot be left unnoticed.

Our team aims to investigate the cyber-security culture readiness along with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic to numerous organizations from different countries, business domains and specialization fields.

EnergyShield project attended the first project to policy kick off seminar (P2PKOS) organised by Research Executive Agency (REA) at the end of January 2020. 

During a full day of both plenary and groups sessions representatives from 34 H2020 cybersecurity projects shared the objectives of the projects and identified ways they could contribute to the enforcement of European Commission recommendation on cybersecurity in energy sector – SWD(2019)1240. 

In a five minutes pitch every project addressed the opportunity of having a domain area for cybersecurity in energy sector.  The EC recommendations on cybersecurity in energy sector are just in time to draft a balanced ecosystem accommodating reliable cyber security measures while protecting emergent business models based on innovation. To the most relevant particularities of cybersecurity in energy sector (real-time requirements, cascading effect and technology mix), the knowledge mix (IT+ power engineering) and the adequacy of measures could add.
 
In the same policy context the Cybersecurity Act  (COM/2017/0477), ENISA calls for appropriate stakeholders’ involvement and support to establish and maintain the trust and security on cybersecurity products, services and processes via an EU cybersecurity certification. Adding to this the recommendation from Smart Grids Task Force Expert Group 2 of having a Network Code on Cybersecurity the need to define the frontiers of cyberescurity in energy sector is taken a step forward.  

EnergyShield project could support these initiatives of the EC through sharing the recommendations to partners and EPES value chain via reports and scientific publications. The defensive toolkit proposed by EnergyShield project brings together cybersecurity approaches (e.g. vulnerability assessment, threat scenario assessment) to adapt and validate to Electrical Power and Energy System (EPES) value chain and could contribute to supply chain cyber security risk management and to the protection of current infrastructure via improving awareness, collaboration and expertise.

EnergyShield project will introduce its objectives and proposed technologies at European Utility Week 2019, in Paris.

The EnergyShield toolkit will comprise specific innovative software components covering cybersecurity assessment (automated threat modelling), monitoring & protection (anomaly detection and DDoS mitigation) and learning & sharing (security information and event management).

EnergyShield is an H2020 project that captures the needs of Electrical Power and Energy System (EPES) operators and combines the latest technologies for vulnerability assessment, supervision and protection to draft a defensive toolkit.

KTH is a partner in an interdisciplinary Consortium (18 partners from 10 European and associated states) that was awarded 7.4 million Euros to implement an Integrated Cybersecurity Solution for the Vulnerability Assessment, Monitoring and Protection of Critical Energy Infrastructures. The EnergyShield Consortium consists of two large industrial partners, supported by six innovative SMEs, three academic research organizations, and seven end-users representing various parts of the EPES value chain. Partners complement each other in terms of competences, expertise and technical capabilities, and market strategy.

Cyber security: unique integrated toolkit for electrical power and energy systems

Berlin, 11 September 2019 – The R&D project EnergyShield (EU-H2020), funded by the European Union, held its kick-off meeting in Bucharest, Romania from 17 to 18 July. Eighteen partner companies from ten different European countries presented their work packages and plans for the next three years. EnergyShield addresses the needs of electrical power and energy system operators (EPES) in the field of cyber security. It combines the latest technologies for vulnerability assessment, monitoring and protection to develop a unique integrated defensive software toolkit.
